“Fat Ape” Mocha Banana Ice Cream

Last week was my first attempt at making banana “ice cream” – blending frozen bananas until they are creamy and smooth – and I was actually pretty shocked at how good it was! Upon first bite I was completely reminded of one of my favorite pre-vegan ice creams – Chunky Monkey and knew I could very easily and cheaply make my own version for Vegan MoFo.

At first I was going to stick to the basic banana, chocolate and walnut recipe, but as I was sitting on my patio drinking my iced mocha a light bulb went off over my head and I decided that it was the best idea ever to add that to the blender while the bananas were being pulverized. Mocha ice cream. I’m a frickin genius, I tell you.

The outcome was so much better than I expected, the mocha mingled perfectly with the banana so each flavor was noticeable but neither was overpowering. This is seriously my new favorite dessert and it was so incredibly simple to make and inexpensive.

If you aren’t into coffee or just don’t want the added caffeine you can substitute any non-dairy milk for the iced mocha. There are a few vegan iced coffees on the market now and Almond Breeze Mocha is by far my favorite. I would like to find their Caramel Macchiato version because I imagine that would be fanfrickintastic in this recipe as well. Definitely going to keep my eyes peeled for that to pop up in my grocery store.

Is it cold like ice cream? I’ve frozen bananas for smoothies and such, but are these bananas frozen? This is a good idea for parents who have kids with a sweet tooth and think they should get dessert every single night.

Yup, very cold…kind of soft serve consistency. You can pop it in the freezer to harden it up a bit if you aren’t going to eat it right away.

Isn’t it amazing what frozen bananas can do? It’s like magic! My husband likes making a smoothie with frozen bananas and coffee that is similar to your ice cream. It’s a good pick me up and tasty too!

That sounds amazing! I usually throw a frozen banana into my morning protein smoothie, but adding a shot of coffee would make it so much better!

I’m off to the kitchen to freeze the rest of our bananas. The fruit flies are driving me nuts, anyway, and frozen bananas will be so much more fun to eat as ice cream. I’m blending mine with cacao nibs and eating it for breakfast.

By virtue of the ingredient COFFEE you are a genius! I just had a Coconut Bliss latte pop for dessert, and now I want some of your coffee chunky monkey to top that off. Sleep…overrated.

I’m soo into banana ice cream AND coffee so you bet I’m gonna try this out. I was just at the store too contemplating getting chocolate chips (for no reason), but now I know there was a reason!

I too was simply amazed by the simple banana ice cream. Your mocha version sounds quite the bomb and easy too! Another banana trick I love is roasting bananas, then using them for banana bread or banana ice cream/soft serve. It really intensifies the banana flavours a thousand-fold!
